About Frierson

I started surfing in 1957 in Coronado, California. My first board was a 9í10íí Hobie and I surfed the area from Carlsbad North to K38 Baja Mexico South. I rode my first epoxy in 1959!! My Navy family moved to Virginia Beach in 1965 and at that time I rode for Hobie through Pete Smith and Bob Hollandís Surf Shop. In 1967, Bob White put a planer in my hands and I started shaping for Wave Riding Vehicles.

After winning the East Coast Championships menís division, I made my first trip to Hawaii. In the winter of 1969/70, I lived on the North Shore of Oahu with my wife Grace and 6 month old daughter Kate. I opened my first small shop in Kitty Hawk, NC in 1970 and spent the winters in Florida where I shaped there for myself and Sunshine Surfboards.

In 1974, with a partner I bought Wave Riding Vehicles. After a great run, I sold my half of WRV in 1991 and started Frierson Designs. I have been shaping surfboards now for over 46 years and Iím sure a few of the over 15,000 sticks that Iíve shaped have made it around the world. Today about 70% of my work is custom order. I was recently inducted to the East Coast Legends. I have surfed Puerto Rico, Barbados, Costa Rica, Mexico, California, Maui, Kaui, and Oahu in Hawaii. My wife Grace and I return to Hawaii every winter where I shape, surf, and maintain old friendships.

Aloha,
Bill Frierson
